Do You Need To Line A Chimney For A Gas Fireplace?

If you have a gas fireplace and you have to satisfy some circumstances in order to be able NOT to line you chimney. But even if you satisfy all of those circumstances it is a really good idea to hire a certified chimney technician to line your chimney so you will have nothing to worry about. If you do not install a chimney liner your fireplace might not work properly and many problems may arise from it.

Possible consequences of deciding not to fit a chimney liner

  • If your chimney is not sound then smoke can travel into you house and it might kill people or animals.
  • Hot smoke rises because it is hot – cool it down and it will slow, stop or sink. If your chimney has voids or non-smooth surfaces that are able to steal the heat, your chimney will be cold and the smoke will not rise. This is increases the risk of the combustibles to slow and deposit tar and condensation which can damage properties. If the smoke slows down your fireplace will burn poorly. Smoke can exit out of the fireplace when you open it to add fuel which adds dangerous gases to the room.
  • If you do not have your chimney lined the chances of a chimney fire happening are greater.

What do you need to know about chimney liners

You may not be able to understand why you need a chimney liner but make no mistake that chimney liners are very crucial to be installed if you have a gas fireplace. The liner helps guide the combustion by-products out and away from the chimney. One of the main reasons why you need a chimney liner is because the liner provides extra protections to the chimney and fires are less likely to happen.

There are three main types of chimney liners: clay tile, cast-in-place and metal liners. They all provide with good protection, but you have to consider all the circumstances when choosing which one would be the best option for you.

  • Clay Tile liners

Clay tiles can withstand really high temperatures without damaging the liner. They also hold up against the corrosive materials that pass through the chimney. They are relatively cheap and have a long lifespan.

The disadvantage of these liners is the cost it takes to install it if it’s not build when building the house. To replace it is even a harder task and greater cost. And if you have a crooked chimney then you are looking at a long and expensive process.

  • Cast-in-line liners

These liners are perfect for creating a new flue for chimneys which are in bad shape. They are not effected by heat or harmful gases. They can last for a long time. They provide good insulation and higher temperatures which enables the fire to burn cleaner.

The process of installing is a difficult task as well. There are a lot of methods for shaping this chimney liner and it is better done by professionals.

  • Metal flue liner

Metal flue liners come in different shapes and varieties of metal used to make them. These liners provide with the proper protection and are the perfect option for already existing chimneys because the process of installation is really simple.
