Drain Cleaning Services: What You Need To Know About Clogged Drains

One of the most common things you have to contend with as a homeowner are clogged drains. Your drains will clog up when there is an accumulation of debris over a long time thus reducing normal water flow through the pipes. According to drain cleaning services providers, the clogging can come up due to various reasons.

Signs of clogged drains

Clogged drains give a number of signs that you should be wary of. Some of these signs include:

Slow drains: This is a no-brainer. Since the diameter of the sewer pipe is compromised, water is bound to drain slower than before.  Did the drains get slow over time or they stopped working abruptly? You need to think about this.

If they got slow over time, it means that the clogging material built up slowly, but if they clogged immediately, it means you put the wrong thing down the drains.

Odors: Odors come about when the clogging materials have buildup in your pipes for a long time. When you don’t regularly clean your drains, sticky substances are bound to cling to the walls of your pipes. Over time, the substances start getting smelly due to the growth of bacteria.

Rust: Rust comes about when iron in the water is exposed to saltwater and humid air. In most cases, when you notice rust in the pipes, it has most likely built up to the walls of the pipes.

How to get rid of clogging material

When you are having clogged drains there are plenty of ways in which you can unclog them. some of these ways include:

Using a plunger: If the clogging material isn’t large, you can easily unclog the sewer line using a plunger. All you need to do is to place the rubber head of the plunger against the drain thus creating a seal. This is to prevent the air from seeping through.

You should then start pushing the plunger until the head inverts. Then release the pushing motion until the head pops back to its original position.

When you do this five or six times you will start noticing the water beginning to drain. If the clog doesn’t go away, try the next trick—using an auger.

Auger: Also called a sewer snake, the auger is an ideal tool to use in unclogging clogs that are located further down the sewer line. For you to unclog the sewer line you should properly use the snake.

Start by removing the screening covering the access to the drains then insert the snake cable into the drain. While inserting the cable, remember to rotate the handle clockwise. When the cable gets into contact with the clogging material you should be able to feel some resistance.

When you reach the clog, try to hook it by pulling the cable a little bit and pushing it down. If this doesn’t work, continue pushing the cable until it goes to the other side of the material. You should then remove the cable and pour hot water down the drain.

Chemicals: Do you want the easy way of cleaning the sewer lines? You should use chemicals. Chemicals contain high amounts of sulfuric acid and lyre which ensures that they work as fast as possible.

While the chemicals are highly effective, they usually tend to eat the sewer lines and you have to replace them after some time. In other cases, the chemicals are harmful to you.

For you to protect your pipes, you should use them as the last resort after all the other methods have failed.

How to prevent clogs from coming about

Instead of having to unclog the sewer lines every now and then, isn’t it easy for you to prevent the clogs from coming about in the first place? After all, prevention is always better than cure, right?

For you to prevent clogging your sewer lines you should ensure that you don’t put any materials that can clog the system.

For example, in the toilet, toilet drain cleaning services Westchester providers recommend that you only put solid waste and tissue paper. Avoid putting sanitary towels, plastics, paper towels, and any other non-biodegradable materials down the system.

You also should make a habit of cleaning the drains. Pouring hot water down the drains once a week can go a long way at keeping your lines in top working condition.
